Exhibition: DAS KLEINE FORMAT
From October 15, we will be celebrating the small in a big way. In an art market that is characterized by expansive installations and impressive large formats – works that often attract attention through their sheer size alone – the small format focuses on the opposite: it invites you to pause, step closer and discover the world in the detail. Here, the small becomes a laboratory of reduction in which artists condense complex ideas and emotions into the smallest of spaces.
The exhibition brings together established names with up-and-coming artists and creates an exciting dialog between contemporary positions from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Berlin and Hamburg. The result is a fruitful dialog that reveals the diverse aesthetic and conceptual possibilities of the small format.
Delicate graphics that seem like fleeting thoughts are juxtaposed with sculptural miniatures that carry complex narratives. Photographic snapshots capture the universal on a small scale, while painting, video and object art playfully explore the limits of the format.
In addition to its artistic diversity, the small format has another quality: it is democratic. Unlike large-format objects, which often only find a place in museums or private collections, it is art for everyone: affordable, accessible and yet of great depth. It invites you to discover art beyond the spectacle; as an intimate experience that creates closeness and encourages you to take a closer look.
