August 11 to September 8, 2025 in the Torhaus Gallery, Stadt Wehlen
The annual workshop series is organized by the international outsidein_insideout collective. The theme of this year’s lab is “Sonic Confession”.
The laboratory will take place from 11.8. to 8.9.2025 in the Galerie Torhaus, Stadt Wehlen, with subsequent public presentations in the Galerie Torhaus Wehlen and in the surroundings of the city of Wehlen, in the C. Rockefeller Center for the Contemporary Arts in Dresden and at Ernst-Reuter-Platz in Berlin.
As we enter the second year of Sonic Confession, the exploration of collective creation will be deepened through a self-organized annual art and research lab at Galerie Torhaus Wehlen in Germany’s Saxon Switzerland National Park. Building on last year’s research, existing and emerging approaches and practices as well as the intersections between local culture, nature and evolving technologies will be further elaborated and experimented with. With a further emphasis on correlated complementarity, this year’s lab will focus on sensory perception and the ability to hear, an encounter with listening practices.
While sound remains the focus, the aim is not to exclude other forms of perception, but to encourage a broader dialog about how different types of experience interact and influence each other.
The intention is to include internal and external relationships in our laboratory, i.e. within the group itself, and to link them to the diversity of the cultural environment in which the group is based.
In addition, one of the aspects of the laboratory is the emphasis on actual exchange and joint learning in the field of acoustic ecology.
Ecomusicology is used to explore the relationship between sound and the natural environment. By doing and experiencing, one forms a memory that is encoded in the body. By combining different perspectives and practices of field recording, listening and music/sound production, a philosophical question arises: what is music and what is sound and where is the boundary between them? Can traditions of herbalism, folklore and new thought processes, disembodied beings and technology be brought together?
For this year’s edition, enthusiasts are invited to participate in the exploration of communication possibilities beyond sound-based entities and spaces. Anyone with whom such streams resonate and who is interested.
