Since 2000, The Blue Night has been transforming Nuremberg’s city center into a stage for art, culture and encounters – with around 110,000 visitorsmore than 200 program items and more than 50 participating institutions. Since 2005, the Blue Night Art Competition has been inviting artists to realize site-specific projects in courtyards, special spaces and squares in Nuremberg’s Old Town. What is called for is art that uses spaces, visitors <\/em>and takes place over two nights. Individuals and groups can apply with works from all areas of art, e.g. installations, light art, performance, interactive and participatory actions, media art. Flatware and small sculptures are not suitable for the exhibition venues. <\/p>\n\n

The theme for 2027: So close to the sun.<\/p>\n\n

Ikaros dares to take flight – and crashes. The myth tells of hubris, longing, overconfidence and the price of taking off. For 2027, we are inviting artists to short-circuit this ancient story with questions of the present: Where are we flying too close to the sun right now? Which utopias are carrying us – and which are plunging us into the abyss? The story of Ikaros and his father Daidalos, who escape their captivity with wings made of wax, takes on new relevance in our age of scientific and technological innovation. Technological progress results from the interplay of problem and innovation, which has been steadily increasing in intensity and speed since industrialization. Mankind has never striven faster towards the sun, and even today there are numerous warnings about the failure of “higher, faster, further”. In times of radically accelerating technological development, multiple crises and painful social transformations, Ikaros can serve as a warning, but also as a shining example and projection screen. His myth is an invitation to surpass ourselves, as well as a warning not to go too far in the end. We can hope for success, but there is also an undeniable beauty in failure. The fields of association are deliberately broad – from Greek mythology and romanticism to space travel, from dramatic failure to collective awakening. Climate change, demographics, artificial intelligence, political polarization, personal boundaries: Ikaros is everywhere. The Blue Night 2027 opens up the space between utopia and hubris. <\/p>\n\n
