In 2014, the school took over the neighboring building of the Beucke-Oberschule, which had previouslybeen closed. As part of Berlin\u2019s School Construction Initiative (BSO), the buildings are being completely renovated and restructured. The historic, protected buildings are being supplemented by an extension to meet the need for additional space. In the process, the individual functional areas are being reorganized and clearly structured. The overall project will create a modern school campus that meets future educational requirements and fosters a welcoming learning environment. In addition to the restructuring measures, the existing buildings will be made accessible, upgraded to meet fire safety standards, and their building services systems will be brought up to date. The existing triple-purpose sports hall will be demolished. The extension is located in the center of the new campus and forms the school\u2019s new hub. A passageway designed as an outdoor space connects the open areas of Building A and Building B. Together with the new, spacious cafeteria\u2014complete with a kitchen\u2014and the sports hall, this creates a central gathering place for planned or spontaneous meetings and for people to spend time together. Access to the building is also via the aforementioned passageway. Furthermore, the expansion wing will house the science labs as well as the 10th-grade classrooms. The labs will be complemented by open common areas, which can also be used for independent study. The roof area on the first floor, featuring a rooftop garden and direct access to the science labs, is available for outdoor experiments and testing. A new three-court sports hall is planned; it is located beneath the rooftop garden and is recessed into the ground to half the hall\u2019s height. This allows a view from the passageway into the gym and reduces the building\u2019s visual bulk on the property. In terms of fa\u00e7ade design, the building is divided into a base floor and the upper floors built atop it. A metal fa\u00e7ade with varying textures will be installed. Large, floor-to-ceiling glass facades connect interior and exterior spaces. A metallic facade is proposed for the upper stories. Overall, the facade blends into the surrounding ensemble of historic buildings without losing its distinctiveness or unique character. Assignment<\/strong> The theme of art in architecture stems from an exploration of the spatial, architectural, and social dimensions and contexts of the school, its urban setting, and the functionality of the campus. Within this framework, the goal is to develop works of art that contribute to the perception of the building and its spatial context and enrich the institution\u2019s visual appearance and the quality of the experience it offers. Art in architecture can both integrate into the architecture and develop an independent design identity. The art must not restrict the building\u2019s functionality for academic purposes. <\/p>\n\n
