***DIGITAL DISCUSSION ROUND***
Defending art and culture, fending off right-wing attacks
Analysis, exchange, networks
Art and cultural institutions are increasingly exposed to attacks from right-wing extremists. Attempts at intimidation, vilification and threats – the forms are manifold and fuel uncertainty and fear among cultural workers, especially in Saxony. The open society is also at stake along with artistic freedom. Cultural institutions are often called upon to defend democratic values and social cohesion through their work. But how can they do this when the air is getting thinner financially, politically and in civil society? Where do the necessary resources for ambitious artistic work and dealing with right-wing attacks come from under these conditions? One thing seems more important than ever: alliances, prevention and resistance. Our discussion will focus on the experiences of cultural institutions, independent initiatives and artists themselves. What right-wing influences and attacks are they exposed to locally? How do they deal with this and what specific support do they need? What role must democratic politics play? We will focus on good examples, preventative measures, knowledge exchange and networking.
Following this exchange, a network conference geared towards the needs of the participants is to be held in the second half of the year.
