Art trail “Glowing Horizons” by the Saxony-Anhalt Art Foundation
The year 2025 marks the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants’ War and the 500th anniversary of the death of the reformer and revolutionary Thomas Müntzer. Both will be commemorated in a variety of events in Saxony-Anhalt under the title “Gerechtigkeyt”. One of the central locations is Allstedt, where Thomas Müntzer held his famous sermon in the castle in March 1524, in which he addressed the authorities with his revolutionary ideas.
From March 1523, the reformer was a pastor in Allstedt for a year and a half – after stops in Halle, Halberstadt, Braunschweig and Wittenberg – where he had a lasting impact that reached far beyond the farming town. Allstedt was the center of a radical reformation movement, a testing ground, laboratory and microcosm of Müntzer’s ideas. In the Prince’s Sermon, he granted the subject, the common man, the right to resist for the first time. It therefore marks a turning point in intellectual history. From underage subjects to self-determined people. The sermon is therefore a milestone in the development of basic democratic rights.
In this historic location, the Saxony-Anhalt Art Foundation is organizing an art trail with sculptures, installations and art education activities in the anniversary year (May to October 2025).
Participating artists: Rebecca Belmore, Lucie Göpfert, Hermann Grüneberg, Michael Krenz, Rebekka Rauschhardt, Lisa Reichmann, Matthias Ritzmann, Julia Schleicher, Daniela Schönemann, Luzia Werner, Paula Wolber, Frank Bernhardt and the Pyromantiker, Brigitte Häntsch and Peter Arnke from AHM Architekten.
