Occasion and objective
As part of Berlin’s school construction offensive, the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing is planning and implementing a series of timber-compartment schools (HOCOMP) in a very short space of time. At the Haltoner Straße site in Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf, a three-form elementary school is being built as a compact type building in modular timber construction. A three-field type sports hall in serial timber construction is also planned.
The HOCOMP are characterized by a particularly high level of sustainability. They are certified to the BNB “Silver” standard and built to the EG 40 energy efficiency standard, with photovoltaic systems and green roofs on the school buildings and sports halls. Compared to other building materials, wood has a low ecological footprint. In addition, timber building materials have the ability to bind carbon and thus contribute to climate protection. The basic idea behind the educational concept is the principle of the compartment school. The core of a compartment is a forum that serves as a communal learning and recreation area, around which the classrooms are arranged as regular group and division rooms as well as the team area for the teachers. In addition to the school building, a three-court sports hall will also be built on the site. In addition to new outdoor facilities for school sports, the open space will include a variety of recreational areas for breaks and outdoor learning. The school is a newly founded school. At the time of the Art in Construction tender, the construction work was well advanced. The school building is due to open in September 2026. The construction work must be completed and invoiced in the course of 2027 Until the start of construction work, the site was a brownfield site.
