The project – leitmotif: democracy
From May 23 to September 15, 2026, Kunst findet Stadt invites you to experience contemporary art in unexpected places in Rheinbach’s urban space.
Artists from Rheinbach, the region and from the national and international environment are invited to develop and present works of art in and for public spaces that transform everyday spaces and break up familiar perspectives.
In addition to the exhibition in the public space, an independent, curated exhibition will be realized in shop windows of Rheinbach’s retail trade (July 20 to August 30, 2026).
Artists can apply for these showcase presentations separately and independently of the outdoor competition.
Both calls follow the same thematic leitmotif of democracy, but differ in the presentation context and the respective location requirements. The leitmotif of democracy is intended to encourage artists to take a controversial look at the topic. How can art make democratic processes visible or itself be a place of dialog in which social perspectives and values are negotiated?
Democracy is not a state – democracy is movement. It is a living process that must be constantly renegotiated, tested and defended. It thrives on diversity, contradiction and participation. From the ability to make different voices audible and to create spaces for encounters.
Democracy begins where people get involved – Kunst findet Stadt creates the space where this can be seen and experienced.
Artists wanted! – Eligible to participate are
- Professional artists and artist groups from Germany and abroad
- Artists and students
- Interdisciplinary teams (e.g. from art, architecture, design, urban planning, performance, music or media art)
