Artists with chronic illnesses are structurally disadvantaged in the cultural sector. Many funding institutions are geared towards continuous availability, clear schedules, mobility and a high level of self-organization. These requirements often exclude people with chronic illnesses or force them to make their needs invisible.

At the same time, many chronic illnesses are little researched, barely recognized by society and often invisible. Those affected invest a large part of their energy in everyday organization, regeneration and medical care, often without sufficient support from health insurance companies and therefore with a high financial burden of their own. As a result, artistic work often comes under pressure or becomes completely impossible.

With the space grant for artists with chronic illnesses, Libken wants to make a small but concrete contribution to greater accessibility in the cultural sector. The grant is intended to take individual working realities seriously and open up scope for action.

Target group

The scholarship is aimed at artists with chronic, even invisible illnesses, for example ME/CFS, endometriosis, long Covid, autoimmune diseases, chronic pain syndrome, depression or ulcerative colitis.
People who are basically independent but whose everyday life and ability to work are restricted by their illness and who benefit from a calm, understanding environment are invited to apply.
