Working scholarship in Iceland in cooperation with the Art Foundation

In cooperation with the Skaftfell Art Center in Seyðisfjörður, the Saxony-Anhalt Art Foundation is awarding an international work scholarship in Iceland for the first time. “I am delighted that this new cooperation has come about. Iceland is a highly interesting country, particularly with regard to contemporary art, and a valuable addition to our international scholarship programs,” said Saxony-Anhalt Minister of Culture Rainer Robra. “In this way, we are not only supporting the individual development of the artists, but also strengthening international exchange.”

“The new destination for an Art Foundation scholarship is a country with an affinity for culture, breathtaking nature and an extremely exciting art scene. With the Skaftfell Art Center, we are also cooperating with one of the most important exhibition venues in Iceland, which has shaped generations of artists,” says Foundation Director Manon Bursian. “I am already very excited about the results of the scholarship and I am sure that Iceland offers plenty of opportunities for great inspiration.”

The scholarship period is from August 1 to September 30, 2026. The application deadline is September 29, 2025. Applications can only be submitted via the digital application portal of the Saxony-Anhalt Art Foundation. Applications are open to freelance artists of all disciplines whose main occupation is their main place of residence in Saxony-Anhalt and who can provide evidence of professional success. Students cannot apply.

The Skaftfell Art Center, a regional center for visual arts, is located in Seyðisfjörður in the east of Iceland in the region of Austurland. The Skaftfell Art Center was founded in 1998 in honor of the Swiss-German poet, action and object artist Dieter Roth, who often lived and worked in Seyðisfjörður in the last decade of his life. The Art Center’s scholarship holders have their own studio space and are accommodated in shared accommodation.

The scholarship amounts to 1,500 euros per month. The Art Foundation also covers accommodation and travel costs as well as the cost of international health insurance. A mobility allowance is also granted. Detailed information is available at: Seyðisfjörðu (Iceland) – Art Foundation of the State of Saxony-Anhalt.
