International competition for ceramics

Every two years since 1987, the city of Carouge (Geneva) has organized an international competition for contemporary ceramics, in which the aim is to create works on a given theme. Each work must be an original created specifically for this competition and must not be exhibited before September 19, 2026, the date of the start of the exhibition.

The movement

Clay is a material that has been used since prehistoric times and, despite socio-cultural changes over the centuries, ceramics has been able to reinvent itself time and time again, constantly pushing the boundaries of mere material and making it possible to create not only everyday objects but also works of art.

This constant interplay is reflected in the motto of the 2026 International Ceramics Competition, namely in the: Movement.

The production of ceramics alone involves movement, as clay can be kneaded, rolled, transformed or turned. This theme will enable the individual artists to capture movement in the material. The play of light on the surface can also evoke movement through certain glazes or finishes, textures or shapes. The theme can be interpreted both figuratively and metaphorically and promises diverse and varied artistic approaches.
