How does one’s own judgment change when one knows nothing about the artists’ names or backgrounds? How does one determine the value of a drawing when all works are offered at the same price? Where is the line between art and non-art?
ANONYME ZEICHNER is an exhibition project that explores these questions in practice. The exhibition at “ZAK—Zentrum für Aktuelle Kunst” in Berlin presents approximately 600 drawings by 600 international artists, without revealing their names or the titles of the works.
Each work is offered at a symbolic unit price of 250 €. Of this amount, the artists receive 200 €, and the remaining amount is used to fund future calls for submissions and exhibitions. The flat rate does not reflect the market value of a work. It serves as a conceptual placeholder for every conceivable price in the art market and for the possibility of art beyond economic hierarchies.
Anonymity is maintained until a drawing is sold. As soon as a work is sold, it is removed from the exhibition wall; in its place, the artist’s name and place of origin are written on the wall. In this way, the overall appearance of the exhibition is constantly changing—and the exhibition itself becomes a work of art in progress.
The exhibition is preceded by an international call for submissions. Submissions must be made via an online form. There are no thematic requirements; the only restriction is a maximum size of A3 (29.7 × 42 cm). No biographical information is required. Selection is based exclusively on anonymized image files. Only selected artists will be asked to send their original drawings to Berlin.
Participation is free and open to everyone.
