KHB Kunsthalle Below Artist Residency in summer 2025
As part of the KHB’s residency program in collaboration with the Minimal Travel Working Group, research is being conducted into two aspects: firstly, we are pursuing the goal of reflecting on the term “minimal travel” and making it visible. And secondly, the focus will be on formats that test playing/experimenting with community. Each residency artist works in their own discipline (writing, drawing, photography, performance, object, action, dance, walking, etc.). The KHB invites 3-8 new and professional artists per residency to work at the Kunsthalle Below in summer 2025. The guest artists will work – sometimes together – on topics such as “minimal travel” and the theme of the residency. They benefit from the exchange with the others.

What does the residency involve?

  • communal work area and kitchen according to kunsthallebelow.de/stays/, free accommodation (* for an extra charge in a circus wagon/furnished tent)
  • 3-8 artists work on site at the same time, the exchange is actively supported.
  • Travel, meals, external accommodation and material costs are to be borne by the artist. For contributions, see the individual residency descriptions.(Note: The KHB is not funded or sponsored. It is supported by donations, voluntary work and the residency and membership fees of the guests).
  • Introductory workshop, approx. daily open hours, use/co-design of the KHB collection, joint organization of a public closing event
  • a shared meal + campfire, swimming trip to the lake
  • Feedback discussions, site-specific input, support for special projects at unusual locations in the area
  • Travel information here. Carpooling will be supported / arranged if necessary
  • Making food: Each residency artist usually organizes their own food. At many residencies, the participating artists decide to cook for each other, which was always very nice and delicious.
  • Contributions/fees/prices can be found in the individual program descriptions

THE PROGRAM
Living & working
The experimental community and living and working in the simplicity of the KHB are components of the residency program. This results in a fruitful collegial exchange and often lasting contacts. On request, residency artists + guests can live/work in one of our circus wagons for the duration of their stay (wagon fee: €25-35/day). Otherwise they live and work in chambers and in shared (studio) spaces as described. (We can provide tips for external accommodation on request).

Open Hours
The daily one-hour Open Hours are the heart of the residency program. In this framework, residency artists present their work in the form of a public workshop, a lecture, an exhibition or with performative means.

On site
In addition to organizing their own work/time, each participating residency artist is interested in pursuing joint developments, actively or passively. In each residency, there is the opportunity to participate in an offer of the AG Minimales Reisen and tips from the local, participatory visual artist Stefie Steden.
Some of our residencies are partly in the hands of invited artists, who support the development of a joint project with a daily input.

Show & Collection
Formats created during the residency will be presented to the public as part of an event/show towards the end of the residency and possibly at the “AutumnBanquet” in Berlin. A small contribution by the residency artists will remain in the KHB collection as a copy. These contributions, gifts and smaller works in copy by our guests are accessible to the guest artists and an interested audience.

KHB Fall Banquet at the Berlin branch of KHBstudiosIn the fall, there will be a meeting at KHBstudios Berlin to which all summer alumni are invited. Everyone can bring along interested colleagues and a work for an ad hoc exhibition that was created in connection with the artist residency in Below. Together we will review the rural work phase, exchange ideas and get to know KHB colleagues.

Circus wagon + furnished tent
If you would like to live in a circus wagon, please indicate this in your application and you will receive information about this.

Guests without an artistic profession
In each residency – in addition to places for artists – a place is reserved for a guest without an artistic profession. This person has the special perspective of a non-specialist audience. Just like the artists, they are open to the experimentally simple (hygiene) concept of the KHB and also take part in all events and optionally in the collaborative offerings. She pays double the contribution and in this way supports scholarships for the artists. She sends her application, just like the artists, in the form and letter of motivation by email.

APPLICATION for a residency 2025
APPLICATION FORM (Google form)
Our calls for applications are aimed at new and professional artists of all genres and ages. Networking is important to us, so knowledge of German is an advantage, otherwise at least a good command of English and consideration for the not-so-good English speakers. Having your own car can be very practical, but is not a must. The KHB Kunsthalle Below is an open, lively and tolerant place in process – applicants should welcome the simplicity on site (outhouse and lukewarm outdoor shower, hardly anywifi), have a talent for improvisation, social skills, no fear of spiders and an interest in linking up with the Berlin AG Minimales Reisen. In the event that they are selected, applicants undertake to transfer the contribution promptly and to take all necessary measures in due time to start the stay at the KHB at the agreed time and to be present at least 85% of the time (residence obligation). Applicants are welcome to provide the KHB Collection with a copy of their contribution at the end of their stay. The organization of an Open Hour is an obligatory part of the residency.

Scholarships
As we deliberately work without funding, we do not generally offer scholarships from external sponsors. But we will support you. As soon as you have been selected for an artist residency at the Kunsthalle Below or the KHBstudios, you can receive an official confirmation from us. With this confirmation you can apply for financial support from various organizations. For information, we recommend igbk .de
Solidarity contributions also enable scholarship-like support. If you have already been with us and currently need it, please ask.

Solidarity contributions
The direct solidarity contribution enables participants to provide an amount in addition to their contribution for a residency that enables another artist to take part in a residency at a reduced price. Such a contribution is completely voluntary. If you are in a fortunate situation, you can facilitate a residency for someone in a disadvantaged situation and help make Kunsthalle Below a more accessible and sustainable place.
