Halle (Saale), November 22, 2023
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, With today’s newsletter we cordially invite you to Halberstadt. We are showing the group exhibition “generell frisch” in the magnificent St. Martini church until 3 December and have organized a varied finale for you (see below).

After the “visible” market and the “open studios” in September, we worked intensively on our “Saxony-Anhalt Visual Arts Database” in October. At the beginning of November, directories of the artists Helga Borisch (Magdeburg), Steffen Christophel (Halle), Heidrun Göres (Halle), René Schäffer (Halle), Christina Simon (Weißenfels) and Silke Trekel (Halle) went online.

We are still present in Magdeburg with our “Region in BBK Focus” format, where we have been able to exchange ideas with numerous players in the visual arts – including Forum Gestaltung, Kunst/Mitte, Q.Hof and Galerie Himmelreich – and will soon be working with the city administration to explore how the framework conditions for artistic work can be optimized.

With best regards
from the Board of the BBK Saxony-Anhalt
Marcus-Andreas Mohr (1st Chairman), Annegrete Riebesel (2nd Chairman), Stefanie Demmel, Line Jastram, Marion Münzberg, Friederike Nottrott and Julia Rückert

Visual Arts Database Saxony-Anhalt: Six new directories launched

The “newcomers” to the work database (from left to right): Heidrun Göres, Christina Simon, Katharina Lorenz (course instructor), Helga Borisch, Silke Trekel and Steffen Christophel at the Red Ox Memorial in Halle (Saale) | © Jenny Weber

On November 10, 2023, the Berufsverband Bildender Künstler Sachsen-Anhalt e.V. activated six new directories in the “Werkdatenbank Bildende Kunst Sachsen-Anhalt”. This expands the project, which has been running since 2017, to include important positions in contemporary art from Saxony-Anhalt. This year, the participating artists took part in a three-part course run by the Halle art historian Katharina Lorenz, who was commissioned by the BBK to introduce them to the use of the database. The corrections and editing were carried out by the BBK office. The participating artists and BBK representatives met at the Roter Ochse memorial in Halle (Saale) for the launch. They celebrated the successful completion of a stage with a small drink. This means that 347 works have been added.

A total of 4,849 works by 34 artists are now presented in the work database. New additions:

Helga Borisch (*1939), Magdeburg, 54 works
Steffen Christophel (*1963), Halle (Saale), 51 works
Heidrun Göres (*1948), Halle (Saale), 135 works
René Schäffer (*1975), Halle (Saale), 35 works
Christina Simon (*1963), Weißenfels, 47 works
Silke Trekel (*1969), Halle (Saale), 52 works

November 2023: Diana Höding

© Thomas Kober

The main theme and artistic approach of my work is the ambivalence of life in the field of tension of our contradictory world. In my works of painting and object art, I try to capture today’s complex, fast-moving world of unmanageable scraps of information. Mixed media techniques come very close to this perception. They combine the desire to destroy and dismantle entrenched positions with the creative joy of creating something new and unexpected. It is a convincing means of deconstructing the extreme ideologies of a one-sided world view.

Culture needs inclusion – making diversity visible

In Germany, over 20% of the population live with an impairment – 95% of impairments only occur in the course of life. According to Article 30 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, people with disabilities have a guaranteed right to participate in the arts and culture on an equal basis with others. For the BBK Saxony-Anhalt, it is a self-evident and consistent attitude to stand up for enabling the participation of artists with disabilities. For example, we have contacted representatives of EUCREA – the Association of Art and Disability, the Magdeburg art association Zinnober e.V., the Farbenflimmer artists’ group of the Stadtmission Halle (Saale) and the Stammtisch Inklusion Halle (Saale) in order to actively participate in changing the public perception of artists with disabilities and to help shape the diversification of the art and cultural sector in favor of the people affected. A position paper on diversity in the arts and cultural sector in Germany is available for download from EUCREA here: https://www.eucrea.de/images/downloads/Diversitaet_Online_4.pdf.

Film review of the traveling exhibition “70 years of art in architecture in Germany”

Source: BBR / Studio Krimm Two years ago, we presented the traveling exhibition “70 Years of Art in Architecture in Germany” in Halle (Saale). The Federal Ministry of Construction (BMI) and the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) took the anniversary (1949-2019 or 1989-2019) as an opportunity to create an exhibition and a publication as well as produce a film. Numerous projects by renowned artists were publicized, which are inaccessible to the majority of the population due to their location on federal properties and are therefore hardly known. A supporting programme tailored to Halle (Saale) – organized by Christine Bergmann – took a look at selected local projects and put current practices of art in architecture up for discussion. Now, as part of another project in the “Neustart Kultur” program, we have also been able to complete a short film clip looking back at the Halle version of the exhibition. We would like to thank the Kulturstiftung der Länder with its program “KULTUR.GEMEINSCHAFTEN” as well as Christine Bergmann (director) and Denis Herzog (camera and editing).

You can find more information about the traveling exhibition here.

“Alliance for Free Culture Halle” founded – 5% of the city’s cultural budget for free culture demanded

In October 2023, the interest groups of the independent cultural scene – the IG Freie Theater, IG Bildende Kunst, IG Freie Musikveranstaltende and the Literaturhaus Halle – joined forces to form the “Allianz Freie Kultur Halle”. Together, we will champion the independent cultural scene in Halle, which always provides an essential, diverse and cross-generational offering. This creates a common point of contact for independent culture in Halle. Our first goal is to increase the budget for independent culture in Halle. An increase from the current 2.3% to 5% of the city’s cultural budget is absolutely necessary in view of the fact that the application amount is heavily oversubscribed and the costs for cultural professionals are constantly rising. Further common goals were also discussed at the founding meeting. Also in October, representatives presented the alliance and its demands to the Culture Committee. An invitation was also made to the administration and city politicians to discuss the issues of promoting professionalized structures, space shortages and appropriate remuneration in cultural and artistic work in a timely manner.
