The BBKarium features ceramic objects by Julia Himmelmann that strike a balance between seriousness and humor. Through laconic, humorous works with minimalist forms, the artist explores what eludes us. Between closeness and distance, between drawing near and drifting apart, a diffuse longing emerges. The forms seem familiar. They appear to draw near, then turn away. As the viewer observes them, a quiet, sometimes amusing moment of encounter and recognition arises.
The objects leave room for personal associations and speak of wandering, nestling, touching, swelling, and persevering. The material itself, which bears the immediate traces of the shaping process, becomes a key vehicle for the narrative. Subtly and playfully, Julia Himmelmann reflects the associations of femininity and sensuality woven into the material.
Julia Himmelmann first completed an apprenticeship as a ceramist and then studied in the Sculpture/Ceramics Department at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle. She lives and works in Halle (Saale).
