Through her costume project “Frau Bauhaus/Being a Woman,” artist Anja Wolf explores the historical perception of women at the Bauhaus and her own perception of her role. Through her costumes, she bridges the past and the present and examines societal notions of femininity. Geometric shapes, masks, and experiments with materials draw on the historical costume designs of the Bauhaus stage and Bauhaus festivals. Numerous hands symbolically refer to the diverse activities that women perform, both yesterday and today. By blending masculine and feminine attributes, Wolf challenges traditional gender roles. The cone-shaped, skin-colored design also plays with the image of the female body and questions socially entrenched ideals of beauty.
