Hagen Bäcker works as a metal sculptor and painter, creating both two- and three-dimensional works. His works emerge from constructive, systematic, and playful considerations. Starting with clear forms, he develops groups of works through twisting, mirroring, cutting, and sequencing, with color playing an essential role. Real volumes merge with color-based spatial illusions to form sculptures and wall objects. The starting point is usually rhythmic sequences and variations on a theme.

In recent years, Bäcker has worked extensively with enameled steel, creating both flat and three-dimensional wall objects, and has increasingly focused on works made of painted steel and aluminum. The works on display in Wernigerode are wall-mounted pieces that protrude only minimally into the space and acquire a spatial dimension through cutting and folding. The aluminum parts were painted in color and given graphic textures.
