KaB – Design Competition: Luther House in Lutherstadt Wittenberg

The Luther Memorial Sites Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt is renovating the Luther House in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The project is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) with federal grants, as well as by the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Culture of the State of Saxony-Anhalt. The renovation project aims to improve energy efficiency and enhance tourist access. The Luther House in Wittenberg houses the world’s largest museum dedicated to the history of the Reformation, featuring extensive collections of paintings, writings, and artifacts from the Reformation era, as well as evidence of how Martin Luther and the Reformation have been perceived throughout history. In connection with the energy-efficiency retrofit and tourism development, the permanent exhibition will be redesigned and the exhibition spaces will be renovated. This includes the entrance area for visitors to the Luther House. This entrance area is the “competition site.”

The Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt, as the project owner, is holding a design competition for public art in the entrance area.

The purpose of the “Art in Architecture” competition is to fairly select the best solution for a contemporary artistic project in the entrance hall of the newly redesigned Lutherhaus Museum. The artistic project at the Lutherhaus can be implemented in the second quarter of 2027, in accordance with the construction schedule, and is to be completed by June 30, 2027.

The competition guidelines follow the requirements of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development, and Construction. (See: Binding Guidelines on Art in Architecture, Construction Policy and Architectural Culture Projects, and Standards for Federal Construction, as of 07/2024 – BMWSB, BI5-71017/16#3) and is based on the Guidelines for Planning Competitions (RPW 2013).
