Theme: Fundamental Rights, Articles 7, 12a, 15, 16, 17, 17a, 18, and 19

As part of the “World Design Capital Frankfurt 2026” project, the BBK Frankfurt is planning a major exhibition starting on September 18, 2026, that will explore Articles 1 through 19 of the German Basic Law—the fundamental rights. Each of these articles is to be interpreted through a standalone work of art. We are seeking 8 artists for the articles that have not yet been assigned (see above), each of whom will engage creatively, critically, poetically, or documentarily with one of these articles per design. In a phased call for submissions, artists affiliated with the BBK Frankfurt were initially given the opportunity to apply. In this round, five artists were selected whose submitted proposals were deemed successful. In the second phase of the call, open to artists nationwide, additional artists were included.

’s Goal: The exhibition aims to highlight the significance of fundamental rights for our contemporary society. How are dignity, freedom, equality, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and the right to asylum reflected in art? How are perspectives on these rights changing in a pluralistic, digital, globalized world? At the same time, this project aims to highlight the international diversity of the BBK’s members, our solidarity and ability to network, the substantive seriousness of our artistic work, and our understanding of human rights and democracy. We also expressly welcome international perspectives from our multicultural members to highlight the global nature of the topic. Through our participation in the WDC Project 2026, we anticipate significant public visibility and broad media attention.
We look forward to collaborating with other regional associations that also wish to present the exhibition.
