Cranach Scholarship

Attention: only for students of art colleges or artists at the beginning of their career

Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) was appointed to the Electoral Saxon court in Wittenberg by Frederick the Wise in 1505. Under the art-loving Elector, Cranach was able to build up a successful painting workshop that attracted artists from all over Europe. Painters came to Wittenberg for months or years at a time to work in Cranach’s workshop.

In 1994, the Cranach Foundation set up a studio at the historic site and makes it available to artists for a one-month workshop residency, which is linked to a scholarship. Visitors to the Cranach-Hof can thus follow the artistic creative process and perhaps find access to contemporary art through discussions. The artists also enrich the Cranach Foundation’s youth art school with their work. They can pass on their experiences in talks and workshops with children and young people.

The Cranach Foundation is therefore inviting tenders for the year 2026:

A Cranach scholarship for students from art colleges or artists at the beginning of their career, combined with a stay of one month each in the former Cranach workshop.
The scholarship includes a grant of 1,000.00 euros. Accommodation and the Cranach workshop are also provided. The scholarship is advertised for the period August or September of the respective year.

Applications should include a short biography and details of the artist’s career (including catalogs/photos, no images on digital media). If sent by post, a stamped envelope should be enclosed if the documents are to be returned.

The Cranach Scholarship is linked to:

  • Presence on site for the time funded by the scholarship, combined with opening hours of the workshop on at least three days a week for 3 hours each (Thurs.-Sat. approx. 2-5 p.m.).
  • Willingness to grant visitors to the Cranach-Hof and children and young people from the youth art school access to the workshop during this time and to be available for discussions if necessary.
  • Offer of a public workshop discussion
  • Offer of a workshop lasting several hours for the youth art school during opening hours
